Rethink eLearning content
The world is changing and so does eLearning. New challenges & technologies change the way we design and build eLearning content.
The modern -not necessarily young- learner:
is overwhelmed & distracted
demands timely, quality & relevant content
learns most at the point of need
can access content anywhere & anytime through mobile devices
is always connected
To address these challenges, we need to change our mindset.
To do so, we focus on instructional scaffolding methods, latest neuroscience findings & learner centered design principles.
As a result, we aim to:
Respect their time
- Space out content over time
- Construct small eLearning units
Be realistic
- Promote practice
- Connect to work to make it relevant
- Provide meaningful feedback
Challenge them
- Gradually increase level of difficulty
- Encourage viewing mistakes as opportunities to learn
- Encourage application to different contexts
Provide an experience
- Gain and keep attention
- Highlight accomplishments and praise efforts
- Provoke positive emotions and joyful experiences
- Balance content to the entry-level of learners
Make the connection
- Present concepts in multiple ways
- Provide opportunities for repetition
- Make connections to existing concepts and skills
eLearning content production process
Having worked with numerous instructional design models, we concluded with the following steps:
-
01. Analyze
Define the purpose & set the goals.
- Conduct learning needs analysis.
- Create learner profiles.
- Define measurable results.
-
02. Visualize
Work out how to meet the goals.
- Explore the options and select appropriate activities (instructional design).
- Collaborate and craft the proposed concept (storyboards).
- Build out prototypes.
- Get feedback & iterate.
-
03. Build
Collaborate with SMEs, curate & create.
- Set up global elements (define templates, layouts, reusable content and requirements).
- Build one section.
- Test & improve.
- Extend the build.
- Final testing.
-
04. Optimize
Review the performance & make improvements.
- Gather learner & stakeholder feedback.
- Collect & analyze data from LMS.
- Provide quick fixes if needed.
-
05. Measure & Report
The final step.
- Measure the result and report on the success of the eLearning content.
